A Day Out w/ Thomas

On June 11, we took the boys to see Thomas the Train at Tweetsie Railroad as an early 4th birthday gift for Houston. Since the amusement park is located about five minutes from Uncle Adam’s house, we stayed the weekend at his mountain cabin.

That first night was a rough ‘cause both Zeke and Gabriel woke up with coughing fits. Since then, we’ve upped Zeke’s allergy meds to include both Singulair and an inhaler, and have also been giving Gabriel some nightly antihistamines.

The birthday boy strikes a pose w/ our beloved Thomas.

Thus far, these medicine tweaks have helped with their cough-variant asthma (yeah, we’re pretty sure Gabe has the condition, as well, but we won’t know for sure till he has his allergist appointment later this month), but unfortunately, we didn’t have those extra prescriptions on hand while in the mountains.

Despite sleep interruptions on Friday, the boys were raring to go on Saturday. Adam went to Tweetise before us so he could hook up with Mr. Willie and his kids, Jack and Lettie (also twins). They’re our pals from Charlotte, who we don’t get to see that often, but they were able to make the trek to celebrate Houston’s birthday.

We were also treated to a visit from Granny and Grumps, who came to town for the occasion. Granny did Tweetsie with us, while Grumps vegged out at Adam’s.

The kids’ first ride was the merry-go-round. Houston and Zeke were comfortable, but Gabe was a white-knuckled about the whole thing. Next, they “drove” the racecars. The one Zeke and I were maneuvering broke down, so the lady in the car behind us actually had to push us into the finish line. Zeke thought that was way cool.

The 3 Amigos fly on the airplane ride @ Tweetsie.

The airplane ride was a huge hit, but the tilt-a-whirl was a bust. Everyone hated it, except Houston. “Too fast,” Zeke told Daddy, while Gabe shrieked and clutched me as we rode the seemingly endless torture machine. I was never a fan of the tea cups, so I don’t know why I thought I could pull this off. Luckily, no one hurled.

Our train ride with Thomas was much more pleasant. As the high, lonesome whistle echoed through the mountains, the boys settled in for their locomotive adventure. There was a welcoming cool breeze blowing through the train cars, and the smell (and gritty feel) of coal permeated the air. The ride featured a cowboy-and-Indian skit and some passenger-participation hijinks. What a blast!

After that, the kids had ice cream, met Sir Topham Hatt, rode horses and relaxed in a stage coach. The good times continued once we were back at Adam’s, where the 3 Amigos, Jack and Lettie shot bad guys with their new guns and played to their hearts’ content.

Zeke loves his & brothers’ first-ever ride on the merry-go-round.

That evening, Granny and Grumps took the boys back to their house so Stephen and I could spend some kid-less time with Adam. It was a lovely respite after our day of Thomas fun.

Other June stuff: Houston’s actual birthday was June 26, and we had a small pool party for him (details and pics in the next blog).

The day before our neighbor, Miss Heather, and her kids, took Houston to see his first movie at the theater: “Cars 2.” And earlier that day, Heather and her girls entertained all my boys at their house for hours on end so I could get some shopping done for the birthday shindig.

Moms Club had a playgroup at a “spray ground.” The free facility features geysers, huge water guns, falling buckets of water, arching fountains, misting sprayers, etc. It was a fabulous way to cool off after working up a sweat on the park’s climbing equipment, and all three boys were adventurous on this aquatic outing.

Granny & Gabriel get serious about driving their cool race car.

Houston’s swim lessons were a smashing success. They finished up on June 22 and his coach, Miss Bethany, gave him a positive final report card. Houston’s progress was amazingly fast. He now feels comfortable in the water and understands the basics: paddling, holding your breath under water, floating on your back, pool safety, etc. He is at the point that he’s willing, able and excited to learn even more about swimming.

Houston also likes showing off his new skills to Gabriel and Zeke, who absolutely love imitating anything and everything that big bro does, so hopefully Houston’s knowledge will rub off on them.

This was evident the last time I took them all swimming at the Y a few weeks ago. Daddy met us in the pool after his workout and the twins were drastically more at ease in the water than they had been the two previous times. Thus, it was not near as stressful for me – always a welcome thing for any mommy.

More good news re: Houston comes from his annual eye appointment. You may recall that Houston has Horner’s Syndrome – damage that occurred to his sympathetic pathway while in the birth canal – which in turn affects the muscles in his left eye. The congenital condition gives him slight ptosis of this eye lid and causes the eye to be hazel, not brown like the other.

Houston & Gabriel enjoy the view while riding on Thomas.

In fact, the doc said that his Horner’s eye will probably continue to lighten as he ages ‘cause the lacking sympathetic stimulation interferes with melanin pigmentation in the eye. The doc added that he wouldn’t be surprised if Houston had one brown eye and one blue by the time he was an adult. Are the ladies gonna love this or what?!

Houston was courageous and polite at the appointment – a total 180 from his abhorrent behavior from his previous visits – and has, thankfully, overcome his fear of the eye doctor. We are quite proud.

But the best part of the visit was that the check-up couldn’t have gone better. See, Horner’s can oftentimes lead to astigmatism, damage to the lens and/or cornea, and all-around bad vision. But thankfully, Houston’s eye sight is great and the doc sees no signs of any of that other bad stuff. So, if his appointment next year is as good as this one was, the doc said that he will only have to have eye exams every two years.

June also entailed a visit from Granny and Grumps. As always, they freed us up to get things done around the house and yard. But it was an especially timely visit for me since I was trying to heal a sprained ankle I got from tripping over Zeke and landing on my foot weird while trying not to crush him.

Ride ’em high, cowboys: Daddy offers encouragement to the dudes.

  • Some twin notes: Neither Zeke nor Gabe has mastered the fine art of spitting. But what’s especially funny is Zeke’s version of “spitting” while brushing his teeth: leaning forward dramatically while exclaiming “dobby.” Yep, he’s a nut.
  • Gabriel has officially stopped saying “gock” and instead uses “yes” like a pro.
  • Both Gabe and Zeke are asking lots of questions, which pleases Miss Pat. “What that sound?” is a favorite of Gabe’s.
  • Zeke’s new fave statement is “Me need some-den.” He never knows what that something is, but he finds great pleasure in asking for it.
  • The kids have finally memorized our one Veggies Tales CD from beginning to end. I do believe it’s high time to invest in a new album of ditties by Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber.
  • The 3 Amigos are also making great strides in learning their nighttime prayer. I’d say Houston’s about half way there, while the twins are excellent at yelling out a few words here and there, most notably the final word(s) of each refrain.

What Remains of Spring

It has been nearly a month since my last blog, a ton has been going on, time is especially tight these days, and we just spent a fun-filled weekend up in the mountains (details in the next blog), during which I snapped almost 80 pictures. So, to avoid getting extremely backlogged with this very part-time writing and photography endeavor, prepare for a chronological read.

5/20: The boys and I attended a GMOM picnic at one of my favorite parks. It was cool hangin’ with so many twins and getting to know all the moms and kids a bit better. There weather was perfect and the boys were well-behaved. Nice evening.

The most recent Clan Dillingham photo taken by our pal Steve w/ Sweeter Image.

5/22: Today was our first visit to Westover Church, a congregation of nearly 4,000 members. Sure, the number qualifies it as a mega-church, but it offers many personal, small-group opportunities. We do love our former small, country church, but Stephen and I have been attending Sunday services pretty regularly for more than four years, and we’re searching for something a bit different, as well as a place that provides more kids’ activities and youth education. So far, so good.

5/28: The family had a fantabulous time kicking off Memorial Day weekend at Miss Lorrie and Mr. Kendal’s house. Haylie and Savanah’s daddy cooked us yummy dogs and burgers, while the kids frolicked in the kiddy pool and bounce house. The evening also featured toasted s’mores, hiking in a field and good adult conversation.

5/29: Memorial Day began with church. We were not quite as as overwhelmed by the enormity of the facility today. We saw our old pal, Jeff, who was a regular at the Townhall meet-ups Stephen and I would frequent in our politically active, pre-parental days. We took this encounter as a good sign that Westover will be just our speed. Since all the boys got good reports from their teachers, we went out for a lunch of Indian cuisine. The kids were adventurous in trying new things and enjoyed flirting with our cute waitress.

Our celebration continued that afternoon and night with the boys first time backyard camping. They helped me gather kindling and then assisted me in building a campfire, while Daddy prepped the grill and food. To pass the time waiting for dinner, the 3 Amigos feasted on ears of raw corn and played with their flashlights on Liberty Loop.

Zeke enjoys munching watermelon & trying out big-boy undies for the first time.

Worn out from the feast, Gabriel was the first to pass out in the tent, and Zeke and Houston fell asleep soon thereafter. I camped out with them and was amazed that there was virtually no waking up throughout the night — just good hard sleep in the great outdoors. Stanley also graced us with his presence, sleeping half in and half out of the tent, with his butt being the “in” part, of course.

I didn’t plan on falling asleep as early as I did, but the boys insisted on my being in the tent, so poor Daddy had to hang out all by himself, although I think he ended up enjoying his alone time, and slumbering on the ground actually did my lower back some good. Grerat night for all.

6/1: Gramsey and Papa spent the night. They brought the boys water guns, and then an always-energetic Gramsey played with them out in the oppressive heat all afternoon. Papa oversaw the whole operation, while frequently escaping to the cooler indoor temps. A wonderful visit all around.

6/2: The dudes and I attended a greatly anticipated playdate at Miss Beth’s — a get-together that had been postponed from earlier sicknesses. The 3 Amigos got along wonderfully with cohorts Matthew and Jonathan. They played tee ball, hung out in the kiddy house, dug in the mulch, toy-mowed the grass and just ran around like little monkeys, before feasting on pizza and then cooling off indoors with cars, trains and Diego.

“Bee-bee-bee-yo-kee!” is probably what Gabe is shouting in this gleeful shot.

6/3: I hosted my first Moms Club playgroup. Luckily, the sunny weather was much milder than it had been earlier in the week — definite good fortune, since my event featured outdoor activities: swimming in our pool, playing with big buckets of water and, of course, exploring on Liberty Loop. The kids all played well together and the moms actually had some time to chit chat. I do believe the playdate was a smashing success.

6/4: I took the boys to the 5th birthday party of Dylan, a kid we know from Moms Club. The mostly outdoor event offered lots of physical fun, like a dinosaur bounce house and a gigantic playset, which featured a sweet tire swing and climbing apparatus. The 3 Amigos had a blast.

6/6: While leaving a doc appointment in the morning, I got into a fender bender when backing out of my parking space. Luckily, the kids weren’t with me and neither I or the other driver got hurt. It was a no-fault collision, so Stephen and I will be out a few bucks if we decide to get our rear driver-side door fixed, but in the grand scheme of things, we feel lucky ’cause it could’ve been much worse.

That afternoon, Houston began swim lessons at the Y. Only he and another kid, Jacob, showed up for the 5-person class. So, it was as if Houston and Jacob got semi-private lessons. Their coach, Miss Bethany, made amazing headway on that initial day of getting the boys comfortable in the water, and Houston and Jacob hit it off as insti-buddies. It was amazing to watch from the bleachers as my first born matures into such a cool, confident little man.

Zeke (seen suspended in mid-air), bros & Haylie celebrate Memorial Day w/ bouncing.

6/8: Let’s start off by saying that I went to the doc three times today — a telling note, to say the least. First, I got some blood work done to check on my cholesterol, and then the boys and I headed to the pediatrician for vaccines for Gabriel and Zeke. Two down, one to go.

While picking up the twins after Houston’s swim lessons, Zeke face-planted into the Child Watch door. At first I wasn’t that concerned, since he and Gabriel fall all the time, but once I saw blood gushing from his head, this mama began to freak. Once the Y folks and I got Zeke a little cleaned up and were able to see his wound, I decided that he probably did need a stitch or two. My original plan was to take Gabriel and Houston home to Daddy, and then I would take Zeke to the doc.

Well, by the time I got the kids loaded in the van, Zeke was acting kind of spacey and weird, so I borrowed a cell phone (yep, in case you didn’t no, I don’t own any type of handheld device), left Stephen a message and rushed off to the urgent care with three famished, exhausted toddlers: quite the perfect storm for parental stress. The 3 Amigos were in ultra-naughty mode, rarely giving me a moment’s peace. Although their intense hyperactivity caused me some angst, I did find solace in the fact that Zeke was exhibiting his normal, hyper behavior even before we saw the doc.

Houston impresses the ladies w/ his hardcore aquatic skills.

Stephen finally called the receptionist about about 1 1/2 hours into my arduous stay at the clinic. By this point, Zeke was already back being examined by the nurse, so I told Stephen not to bother making the trek. Soon thereafter, Zeke’s forehead was successfully glued together, saving him the trauma of localized numbing and a couple stitches. And at end of the procedure and without any urging from Mommy, Zeke said, “Thank you, doc-tuh.” It was quite the heartwarming moment. Sure, they’re a bit wild sometimes, but my boys can also be sweet as pie.

A few weeks back, it seemed as if Zeke had a constant battle going on between naughty and nice, with an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other. His behavior has drastically improved as of late. It’s not perfect, by any means, but it is much more tolerable. I mean, last time I blogged, I had cried pretty much every day that week, and felt frustrated and defeated. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, I have taken back control, regained my confidence (for the moment) and not shed one tear since then. Ah, motherhood … although it is intense and often thankless, it is also the toughest job you’ll ever love.

It is the oft-blogged-about Zeke, though, whose table manners have blown away the competition recently. Houston is always playing with his hands — making them fight each other like good guys vs. bad guys, or dive out of the air like bombs, or crash onto his plate like an exploding grenade, or shoot webs like Spidey, or march across the table like an AT-AT walker, etc. — and Gabriel is, as Granny would say, like a worm a hot ashes: rarely sitting still while eating. Truth is, there’s never a dull moment at mealtime.

Avid outdoorsmen Gabriel (foreground) & Zeke explore the wilds of Miss Lorrie’s backyard.

Gabriel, who thinks he is quite the comedian, likes to happily shout his made-up words, “bee-yo-kee” and “giddons.” The utterances have so persisted, despite Gabe and Zeke’s stellar success with speech therapy, that the words are simply part of the household lexicon with everyone speaking them and using them for any type of description and/or exclamation.

Houston has been a confident the singer for a while now, but the twins are catching up. The 3 Amigos especially love Veggie Tales songs and let it rip whenever they feel so inclined. They are also intent on finally learning and reciting their nightly “Now I lay me down to sleep” prayer and love yelling out prayer requests, such as Gabriel’s recent plea for “Free Comic Book Day.”

Due to a fabulously well-written letter to the Clerk of Courts, I got out of my jury duty … for now.

Free Comic Book Day

We attended this fabulous event at Daddy’s local comic book store the first weekend of May. And considering that the annual giveaway entails waiting in line on a sidewalk in a strip-mall parking lot for hours on end, amazingly, the jaunt was a smashing success!

We were particularly impressed with Zeke, who was the trouble-maker on the previous family outing. Sure, we understand he’s going through the throes of the terrible twos, and that his strong-willed spirit has served him well in life — certainly helping him survive TTTS, the NICU and CCAM surgery, and deal with an umbilical hernia, acid reflux and now asthma — but tantrums suck and have to be dealt with in productive ways. So, I pick and choose my battles with the contrarian, and always have to plan ahead for outings, notably those with the whole clan.

First crush: Zeke & Wonder Woman bond @ Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7.

Having brought two cars to the event helped to take some pressure off. And then the presence of an attractive Wonder Woman, who seemed to be immediately fond of the 3 Amigos, didn’t hurt in setting the day’s mood either. In fact, “Woman,” as Zeke lovingly refers to her, had a special thing for Z-Bird.

There was even this humorous moment toward the end of the boys’ three-hour stint when WW checked in on the boys, and an exhausted Zeke gave an eye-level stare at her thigh while standing and then a fatigued gaze at her breast as she held him. Obviously, this interplay provided much comedy for the nearby comic geeks.

As far as the other 2 Amigos go, Houston was shy at first and a bit overwhelmed by the super-hero aura. Gabriel was awestruck, as well, but was also a tad whiney and needy. The fact that we stood in line with the Hydes and that the boys were able to play with Matthew and Jonathan helped to pass the time and keep the kids’ unruly behavior at bay. Thank goodness for friends and super-heroes.

Not only did we have happy children that day, we had a happy Daddy. I took the boys home in our “escape car,” so Daddy could stay to score some cool sketches and autographs, as well as spend some time with Auntie Merdy and Uncle Greg.

The nicest Captain America ever shares his shield w/ the 3 Amigos.

Unfortunately, the day following our comic-book merriment, sickness again infested our home. By the evening, the kids had slightly red, goopy eyes. But because the symptoms weren’t that acute, I chocked it up to seasonal allergies and not something serious. We did our normal routine the first part of the week. But by Wednesday, the kids’ eyes had worsened, and both Gabriel and Zeke had intermittent fevers throughout the day, so it was apparent we should institute a self-quarantine.

That night, the boys awoke to the frightening realization that they were unable to open their eyelids because of encrusted sappy secretions. Poor Gabe, both of his eyes were sealed. To top it off, Zeke had a temperature more than 104°. Tylenol brought it down, but it was obvious this ailment was getting worse, not better.

The next morning, Stephen called our inept pediatrician and explained the fevers and eye conditions, to which he queried, “And what would you like me to do about it?” Yeah, we’ll be finding a new pediatrician really soon. Luckily, not all the docs in our area are that lame, and we were able to go see a great physician at our frequented trusty-worthy family medicine practice.

Turns out, that the kids indeed had pinkeye, and Gabriel and Zeke have ear infections in both ears to boot. Dr. Sharon prescribed eye drops, which almost immediately cleared up the nasty and annoying symptoms of the pinkeye. She also put Gabe and Zeke on strong antibiotics, which took a few days to start working, but have now (along with a regimen of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen) done away with their ear pain and high fevers. Thank God for modern medicine and docs who actually give a hoot about their patients.

“Super-Mom-Super-Wife-Super Tired” Girl & Green Lantern brandish their awesome power rings.

Since the twins have been fever-free since Saturday and the pinkeye will no longer be communicable after five days, we are set to get back to our fun-filled schedule as of tomorrow, and just keep on trying our best to get and stay healthy. Even though it seems as if there’s always some malady lurking around the corner, the doc encouraged us by saying that these viruses and infections aren’t for naught: each time the kids get sick, they build antibodies that will in turn prevent future illnesses. One can only hope.

So yeah, the bad news for the kids is that they missed out on strawberry picking with Moms Club, a free bluegrass festival, church, and playdate at Matthew and Jonathan’s house. But the good news is that Grumps is feeling good these days, so Granny came to visit last weekend — first time since January! She helped me sanitize the toys and wash a ton of possibly infected laundry, since instances of pinkeye reinfection are fairly common.

Granny also gave us a break on the parenting front. I finally dyed my hair and went for a haircut, and then got my 90-minute massage. Very nice. Stephen caught up on sleep, since his sinus infection has worsened as of late. Thanks a million, Granny!

“Hot Guy” Spidey thrills the kids w/ his appearance. (Check out the sketch this stoner got artist Ryan Dunlavey to draw for him.)

Miscellaneous happenings, random thoughts:

  • As if my hectic life weren’t enough, I received a summons for jury duty. I’m going to request an excusal, but if I don’t get it, I’ll just wear my Fair Tax button on my Ron Paul t-shirt while carrying my messenger bag that features a “Don’t Tread on Me” patch to the jury assembly room. That should get me recused, for sure.
  • We had “Christmas In May” today. I gave into Houston’s occasional pleading for holiday entertainment. We watched “Rudolph” and “The Grinch,” and read “Frosty the Snowman.”
  • Zeke’s obstinate behavior has even shone through for Miss Pat our last couple times at speech therapy, but Gabriel has totally made up for it. He recently mastered Who, What, When and Where questions with much depth and detail. Pat said that this was not only a milestone for Gabe, but that it’s also pretty advanced for his age.
  • Miss Lorrie and I have taken the boys swimming at the Y twice now. All have improved in just two aquatic outings, exhibiting greater skill, comfort and bravery by the second lesson. I also made the mistake first time around of getting them all cleaned up in the family locker post-swim. Way too crazy. Now I just dry ’em off and load ’em up. Much smarter.
  • In late April, I went to another doc to try to tackle my sinus infection, which is still lingering a bit. In addition to some helpful meds, I also got a physical and some blood work done to rule out that anything major might be wrong. After all, I’ve been extremely ill four times this year. But I’m fine, thankfully, other than some slightly elevated lipids.
  • All the boys love to chant and sing, and even make up their own songs. Zeke’s recent creation is a lilting “Going up, going down, going up, going down.” Quite a lovely ditty.
  • Driving around with the boys is a chatter-infused adventure. These are some recent musings of the twins: “Look, Mommy, McDonald’s … Taco Bell … Wendy’s … Happy Easter, church … Mom’s Club church (where we have our monthly socials) … pretty house … hiking trail … firemen … apple store (Lowe’s Foods) … lion store (Food Lion) … lake … flags.”

Houston proudly poses w/ one of his favorite Marvel anti-heroes, Deadpool. (Click this pic to see all the photos.)

  • Houston, on the other hand, is a total backseat driver. He already knows about right turn on red, yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, speed limits, passing in the lefthand lane and a variety of other driving-related rules. I bet he knows more motor vehicle laws than your average driver.
  • Speaking of driving, getting stuck behind a Prius, especially when motoring uphill, totally sucks. What doesn’t suck is the Foo Fighters’ new CD, Wasting Light. Absolutely awesome.

Early May milestones

  • Both Gabriel and Zeke finally figured out how to climb out of their cribs. Needless to say, the bedtime shenanigans (especially considering that Houston is also sleeping in the twins’ room now) are at an all-time high. It is not uncommon to put them down in their own beds and find them all piled on top of one another in a single crib later. Wake-up time has become a new adventure, as well.
  • Houston put on his socks and shoes for the first time all by himself. He is surely no master at the task as of yet, but he loves to try.
  • Houston experienced his first real fight. Two boys at a playdate allegedly ganged up on him and one bit his finger. They said he started it and he said they did, further justifying himself by adding, “But Mommy, I was defending myself.” All is well amongst the dudes now, but it was definitely a teachable moment.
  • Big bro has also taken to heading up the twins’ potty training. He is always encouraging them, showing them the ropes and just being such a positive force. I even woke up one morning to find that Houston had gotten Gabe on the little potty, while he went on the big potty. Now why Gabe was totally nude is still unclear. Zany boys.
