Progress On All Fronts

“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!”

– Psalms 139: 13-17

Gabriel at 30 weeks.

Well, I’ll be 31 weeks on Tuesday, and Gabriel and Zeke are still hangin’ tough, growing like crazy and beating my insides nearly nonstop. Their latest ultrasounds and biophysical profiles have been excellent, so if I can just make it another few weeks, the boys will hopefully not have to be subjected to a long-term stay in the NICU and can come home from the hospital with me. Click the ultrasound images to see some more 30-week photos. Don’t the boys look like Houston? And be sure to note Zeke’s unabashed crotch shot, which brought much pride to his Grumps!

Zeke at 30 weeks.

Everyone has been swamped around here, trying diligently to turn our former office into a nursery for the twins. We’ve moved a bunch of our office and music equipment into the master bedroom, and lots of random items have been put into into newly organized closets and the attic. During our fleeting Houston breaks, we’ve been busy been assembling furniture (Stephen), spray painting hand-me-down furniture (Gramsey) and washing newborn clothes (Granny). I, of course, have only been able to assist with recommendations and ideas, which is a pain for both me and others involved. The nursery is still light years from being ready for two little dudes, but we’re trying to dwell on the positive progress made and not the negative.

Running wild with Auntie Merdy in September 2008.

Houston has really grown accustomed to his (and Mommy’s) many caregivers: Gramsey during the week, Granny and Grumps on the weekends, and our good pal, Meredith, on Fridays. Click the above photo of Meredith and Houston to view all of the September pics. We try to make sure he has an occasional play date with some of his neighborhood buddies, like Dixie and Gracie, and he always enjoys hanging out in the church nursery on Sundays. Our social butterfly has also attended three birthday parties and a neighborhood bash since all this craziness began. Click the photo below to check out Houston having a ball at Gracie’s 2nd birthday party.

In addition, some ladies from our church and a few gals from the neighborhood threw us two separate baby showers last weekend (click links to view photos). Since I’m on bed rest for the duration of the pregnancy, both showers were held at our house. I did make myself look as presentable as possible, but I ate cake, chit chatted and opened gifts from my living-room lair (i.e., the pulled-out futon, which is always covered in an array of pillows and blankets). Being so utterly confined to the house for nearly 11 weeks now, it was wonderful to have so many caring people visit … just another reminder of how truly blessed we are!

My Birthday Wish

I turned 37 years young on Saturday, August 30, and my birthday wish has come true: Gabriel and Zeke are alive, healthy and continuing to grow big and strong inside of me! There were times I thought my pregnancy would never make it this far, and as of tomorrow, I will be 28 weeks and counting. Our sweet boys are truly a miracle of God and modern medicine!

Gabriel in utero at 26 weeks.

These 4D images were done at my last ultrasound on August 25. There are a few more choice in-uterine photos available for your viewing pleasure; click the photo of Gabriel above and the photo of Zeke below to check ’em out.

At that ultrasound, Gabriel’s heart rate was 164 and he weighed 1 pound, 11 ounces, and Zeke’s heart rate was 158 and he weighed 1 pound, 13 ounces. The doc says everything is still looking “stable,” including Zeke’s CCAM, which remains unchanged. Dr. Smith, a new specialist to the practice, also pointed out that she has had two previous TTTS patients, both of whom had fetoscopic surgery like me and made it to 37 weeks (note: 35 weeks gestation is regarded as full-term for a “normal” twin pregnancy). In her medical opinion, it is not a sure thing that Gabriel and Zeke will preemies after all. So, if by the grace of God we can make it another seven weeks, the boys will be coming home from the hospital with me. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

I had a prenatal appointment with my OB on August 27 (heart rates were 160 for Gabriel and 152 for Zeke). Dr. Stringer says he wants to start doing a once-weekly biophysical profile beginning at 30 weeks, instead of a twice-weekly non-stress EKG test beginning at 32 weeks, which is another option for twin pregnancies. The biophysical test is just a fancy ultrasound, testing for the same thing as would the EKG: making sure that my placenta is providing Gabriel and Zeke everything they need for good health and that the boys are adjusting well to their in-uterine environment. This includes doing detailed analysis of heart tone, amniotic fluid, flexion of extremities, and diaphragm and fetal breathing.

Houston plays at the park after his 1st haircut in August 2008.

Houston had his first real haircut on August 28. I knew he wouldn’t love the experience, but I was surprised how much he actually hated it. Thank goodness it was a quickie cut because he wailed the entire time. To make up for any trauma we unintentionally induced, Gramsey and I decided to get him an ice cream treat and then have some outdoor fun at a nearby park. Needless to say, he got over the haircut pretty quickly.

Full of Life

Helping Gramsey exercise in August 2008.

The twins’ weekly ultrasound on August 18 was again positive. Zeke’s bladder was “normal;” heart rates were 135 for Gabriel and 144 for Zeke; there were nice pockets of fluid found in both baby’s sacs; and there is plenty of room for the boys to move about, kicking and karate-chopping one another and me. I also got a steroid shot that day (and then a follow-up dose 24 hours later). This is to help speed along the twins’ lung development, since they are undoubtedly going to be preemies.

According to the ultrasound, Zeke’s CCAM also remains small and unchanged. On August 20, we finally we finally had a consult with pediatric surgeon Dr. Petty. He says there are no complicated features to Zeke’s CCAM, and he agrees that the benign tumor seems not to be growing. In fact, he explained that the darn thing could possibly even be a cyst, which could just go away on its own. Therefore, Dr. Petty wants to do more imaging of Zeke’s lungs after he is born (around 3 months old) and, if the spot is a CCAM after all, remove it when Zeke is about 6 months old. He believes that CCAMs are a risk for lung infection and that there is also a cancer link for later adulthood. Stephen and I agree, and we we want to nip this in the bud as soon as possible to avoid any future problems.

Houston loving his new Reds hat from Daddy in August 2008.

Houston Lee is just the light of our life. His warmth, innocence and radiance helps to lift us up on those inevitable days when we feel like life is beating us down. Some of the things he’s really into these days are:

  • yelling “dada” at full volume;
  • squealing when he’s being tickled;
  • astounding us daily with his smarts;
  • doing old signs (like hat, dog, Daddy, more) and new signs (like shoes and bath);
  • playing in the bathtub;
  • looking cool while donning a drool scarf to contain his teething juices;
  • running like an Olympian;
  • and hugging/wrestling anyone and everyone, but especially other children.
